This for That

Around March time I was delighted to be contacted by the guys at Ice cream Architecture and Somewhereto_ to say that they'd like me to make a film for them for their new social enterprise called This for That. This for That is a social enterprise that encourages different organisations to exchange assets, resources and skills to combat a lack of actual funding. This means that they can get things that they want even if they don't have alot of money to spare.
They wanted a promotional video that they would show to backers to hopefully gain funding. They gave me a very tight deadline of about 2 weeks to create this film. I met up with Sarah one of the organisers to discuss what they wanted. I had made a film in the past for Somewhereto_ and they chose me to make the films as they liked my quirky style, I didn't really know I was quirky but I guess its because most of my work looks a bit messy and rough around the edges. I like working like that though so I'm glad other people appreciate it too.
I made a very quick story board and a script for the film, They sent me their graphic designs for he film which helped me alot to get a similar style and colour scheme.

These visuals would go with a voice over script that I wrote

This for that script
Scotland economic climate is ever declining. Cuts to funding , services and resources is causing organisations to work and do more with less.
There is a need for a more sustainable community infrastructure. We need to unlock unused, vacant resource and make assets more mobile and shareable.
But people aren’t connected with each other, we need collaboration between different groups. This will heighten the chances of achieving common goals.
That is where we come in
We are This for That
An online social exchange platform that stimulates a circular sharing economy. We work on a task and reward system.
Organisations can offer their own assets in return for desirable skills or resources from other groups. Thus encouraging much needed collaboration and hopefully sustaining and strengthening private organisations for the future.

They were quite pleased with the storyboard, they liked how played on the words with my visuals and thought it was quite a pleasantly humorous little film. They suggested to have more people in the film so I changed some of the scenes to incorporate this.
I also suggested that it would be a good idea to use rotoscoping to save on time. They were very keen to have people in the film so I thought this would be the most time effective method of doing so. I did a small example of this to show them what I meant. they liked it so I went ahead with the rest of the film.

I tried to do this on limited frames just so I could try and get the film done in time. Some of the scenes were only around 8 frames per second, but I don't think it looks too clunky.

I got one scene done so I could show my aesthetic and give the guys an idea of what the entire film would look like.

They liked the look of it and gave me the go ahead to continue with the rest of the film.
I didn't really face too many issues with making the film, most of it was just trying to get it done in time.

This was my first draft that I sent, unfortuately it rendered out with a very strange aspect ratio but it gave them the idea

There were a few minor changes that had to be made, like the writing on the resource box and the line thickness on some of the rotoscoping.  They also decided that they wanted the script changed, so I had to get that rerecorded pretty fast.

This was my final result

I was rather proud of it at the time. I think mainly because of how little time I had to do it. but to be honest rewatching it makes me cringe a bit. I think the timing on some of the animation is quite jarring. Like when the girl runs way from the scissors and then suddenly the resource box appears. also I slowed down some of the animation to fit with the soundtrack, it does look rather clunky. also the computer screen scene seems to jolt quite a bit. I like the scissors scene however, I think it looks quite smooth. I also like the scene with the sewing machine, camera and shop front. But in all honestly my opinion of it doesn't really matter this time because the guys at this for that really liked it and I even got paid for it. They said they would really like to work with me in the future, they're just not sure what they want from me yet. So all in all it was a great opportunity and I hope it gives me more in the future.
